My Story
My background as a 5-year varsity athlete, education and scholarly pursuits, practical experience in the field, and passion for optimizing sport performance, combine to provide the foundations for my capacity to help you unlock your full potential as an athlete.
Sport has always been instrumental in my life. From early photos of me kicking a soccer ball as a toddler, to hoisting a national championship trophy in adulthood, my passion for sport never wavered.
Along the way, I experienced many of the highs and lows that athletes endure, and during my time as a student athlete majoring in Psychology at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), the connection between sport and mind became clear. Training, as it has been traditionally viewed, meant more hours on the field/court/ice/track/studio/trails, and in the gym.
No doubt, this is essential to reaching one’s potential, but the missing piece? Mental training. Do you have the focus? The concentration? The ability to push yourself through when the going gets tough? The tools to calm yourself in the most pressure-evoking scenarios? The mindset to put in the work when you’d rather hang out with friends or scroll through social media?
After completing my degree in Psychology, I pursued a Master’s of Science degree in Kinesiology, the study of human movement, with a focus on the social and psychological elements of sport.
I would then take a brief hiatus from academia to take on the role of Technical Director for a local soccer club in Saskatoon, SK, which helped me develop a hands-on feel for the needs of athletes, coaches, and team dynamics.
Thereafter, having a newfound appreciation and understanding for how athletes optimally function, I returned to academia to complete a PhD in Kinesiology, again focusing on the mental side of sport. I have since been involved in research in the role of Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and taught over 30 university courses across undergraduate and graduate levels. Currently, I teach at Vancouver Island University (VIU), situated in Nanaimo, BC, and remotely at UBC.
In short, I’ve devoted my life to understanding how to optimize athletes’ mental performance, and I am well-positioned and eager to work with you to help optimize your’s through mental performance consultation.
I look forward to working with you!
